Lolita is a modest fashion that originated in Japan, based upon and inspired by the Victorian-era and Rococo-era clothing.
It is in no way associated to Vladimir Nabokov’s novel, despite having the same tittle. There are many theories as to why
it was named this due to the sexual connotations of the book from the
same tittle, some believe it may have simply been lost in translation.
Whatever the reason ‘Lolita’ in terms of the fashion subculture is in no
way related and instead focuses on having child like aesthetics,
modesty and purity. The fashion is dressing for one’s self, rather than
for men like in most popular Western fashions.
Lolita is in no way just a costume or ‘cosplay’ that is only worn to anime conventions and other such events (although some choose to adapt it that way). Lolita for many, is a serious and lovable fashion that some even adapt into their lifestyles.
